The horror franchise The Conjuring (o The spell as we know it in this market), continues to expand its cinematographic universe with upcoming installments, The Nun 2y The Conjuring 4although the creator of the saga, James Wanhas been in charge of announcing that The Crooked Manspinoff of The Conjuring 2 (2016), will not continue its development.

Wan shared some throwback images on Instagram, where he talks about the good work done by Javier Botetwho characterized the terrifying character in The spell 2and whose work was pure camera trick and no special effects, “I shot it in slow motion and reverse playback, all the old school camera tricks”. Wan took the opportunity to clarify to the thousands of his followers that “Unfortunately, the spinoff with this character will not happen. [Es algo] out of my control. But maybe one day.”

Originally, the project was launched in June 2017 by New Line Cinema, announcing in that instance a script by Mike Van Waes, a story by Wan, who would remain in the ranks as producer, alongside Peter Safran.

The lanky and crooked evil being, The Crooked Man, made his first appearance in the Wan-directed, The spell 2which again had Patrick Wilson y Vera Farmiga like Ed and Lorraine Warren, the real-life paranormal investigators. The character who owes his origins to an English nursery rhyme.

Shortly after announcing the spinoff, Wan told EW about the plans for the film, saying:

“We think we have a really exciting story. What we want to do, with the universe of The Conjuring, is that each of our little sprouts has a very different flavor, right? Then, for example, Annabelle is the classic haunted doll subgenre. And with The Crooked Man, I’d love to push it further down a bit of that darker, more whimsical fairy tale subgenre.. I love the idea that within the Conjuring universe, each of our little movies has its own flavor, so they don’t feel like they’re the same movies.”

In 2019, a year after the theatrical release of The Nunwhich became the highest-grossing entry in the Conjuring Cinematic Universe, plans for The Crooked Man took the back seat, to give priority to Annabelle Comes Home, y The Nun 2. This is what Safran commented at the time:

“The audience often tells you what should come next. When we made The Conjuring 2, we thought Crooked Man should be next. We loved it. She was a great character. Instead, the audience was fascinated by the nun.”

It doesn’t mean we won’t do Crooked Man, but you have to balance the franchise. I’m sure we have ideas of what to do after this, from the item room, but I suspect that probably… The audience will tell us exactly what to do..”
