Los Emmys They are preparing to leave the traditional television network and move to streaming.
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS, for its acronym in English, Academy of Television Arts & Sciences) reached a six year agreement con Prime Video from Amazon, announced this Tuesday, with which The streaming platform will become the exclusive world headquarters of the Emmy Awardsaccording to reports from official media such as THR and CNN.
The agreement will come into effect with the 2027 ceremony and will end the traditional rotation system known as “Wheel Deal”, through which the transmission alternated between the ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC networks. The delivery of the 2026 Emmys, held last Monday, September 14, puts an end to that rotation among the open television networks in the United States.
We find ourselves in times where Streaming services are increasingly betting on the transmission of live events (sports and entertainment) and incorporating into this business model for a global audience. Thus, traditional television networks face increasing competition from streaming services, as consumer habits shift towards digital platforms.
The organizers of the Oscar Awards announced in December of last year that, starting in 2029, the broadcast of the event would leave ABC to be broadcast live on YouTube to the world, with an agreement that includes access to all Oscar-related events: nominations, Governors Awards, backstage, red carpet, the Oscar ceremony, and much more.
Until this year, TNT and HBO Max were in charge of broadcasting the Emmys throughout Latin America, while Netflix broadcasts the SAG Awards – renamed the Actors Awards – around the world. And while the Emmys move to Prime Video globally, TNT and HBO Max will continue to be the home of the Golden Globes in our region.
The Emmy Awards ceremony will still air live in September, but will be available for free to viewers around the world without a Prime Video subscription, Amazon said.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
