Lionsgate is preparing the film adaptation of The Housemaidbased on the bestseller of the same name by Freida McFadden.
The project revealed progress in development, closing an agreement for the signing of Sydney Sweeney (Immaculate, Anyone But You) in a leading role with Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!, The Dropout), according to reports from Deadline.
Paul Feig (A Simple Favor) will direct the script of Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys).
“In the film, Sweeney will play Millie, a struggling woman who is relieved to have a fresh start as a domestic servant to Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew, a wealthy, upper-class couple. He soon discovers that the family's secrets are much more dangerous than his own.
McFadden's novel has been on the New York Times bestseller list for over a year (75 weeks), and on Amazon's best sellers for over 98 weeks. It also broke the record of 500 million pages read on Kindle and is the second most read title on Kindle's 10th anniversary, only behind the series Harry Potter. It has sold more than 3.6 million copies in English and has been translated into 40 languages.
Adam Fogelson, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a press release:
“I am delighted that The Housemaid is joining our upcoming slate of films. A great filmmaker and a great cast with a great script for a great book is a great starting point. My previous work experiences with Paul and Amanda have been spectacular, and Sydney is as talented and engaging as can be.”
Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures will produce, along with Feig and Laura Fischer of Feigco. Sweeney and Seyfried will executive produce with Alex Young and McFadden.
Sweeney is recognized for her work on the HBO series, Euphoria y The White Lotusand became a big screen sensation on the rom-com Anyone But Youco-starring Glen Powell. This year he starred in the horror hit Immaculate. In recent weeks, he celebrated the premiere of his next film, Eden, at TIFF.
Seyfried, for her part, has just won the Emmy for her performance as Elizabeth Holmes in the Hulu series, The Dropout. He also starred in the Apple TV+ series, The Crowded Room in 2023 and premiered the drama Seven Veilsthis year he starred in the horror comedy I Don’t Understand You.
