Sony Pictures gave the green light to a new slasher sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer in February 2023, with the director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge, Someone Great), the screenwriter Leah McKendricky Neal H. Moritz as a producer.

Waiting to know details about the project, such as whether this will have the return of the original stars, Jennifer Love Hewitt y Freddie Prinze Jr., Since it was announced that this would be a kind of legacy sequel, screenwriter McKendrick spoke with Collider, who, being very careful not to reveal details of the plans, did share some of her views:

“…no spoilers, but I will say that I think if you're a fan of the original like you and I, I think you'll be happy. I think you will understand.”

“In essence, I think really takes into account some great ideas about hero and villain, good and evil, how your skeletons come back to haunt you. Y “In the age of the Internet and the age where fame is such a revered concept, the creation of TikTok and social media, who is Julie James in a world where there are no secrets anymore?”

“I already feel like I'm saying too much, but I think at its core, if you watch the original… obviously I watched it 8 million times while I was working on it… but it's fun. [La original] It's just a wild, popcorn ride. Sometimes it's cheesy, Jennifer Love Hewitt is so sexy, Freddie Prinze Jr. is so sexy. Sarah Michelle [Gellar]Ryan [Phillippe]They're so beautiful. It's like beautiful people behave badly. You just can't get enough. There's a lot of that in this movie..”

The original film directed by Jim Gillespie, is loosely inspired by the thriller novel of the same name by Lois Duncan. The film scripted by Kevin Williamson, It arrived in theaters shortly after the hit Scream (nineteen ninety six). After the box office success of the latter, Sony's Columbia Pictures bought the rights to the screenplay by Williamson (screenwriter of Scream and its sequels), taking advantage of the huge resurgence of the slasher genre in the mid-90s.

And this time the strategy is repeated, since it is said that Robinson and McKendrick were inspired by the resurgence of the saga Screamwhich released the fifth installment in 2022, and the following year it was released Scream VI.

The plot of I Know What You Did Last Summer focuses on a group of four friends, Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Barry (Ryan Phillippe) y Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who, on American Independence Day and after celebrating their high school graduation, accidentally run over and kill a man fleeing the crime scene, after throwing the body into a lake. Nothing happens until a year later, when one of the group members, Julie, receives an anonymous message: “I know what they did last summer.” After the mysterious letter, a man dressed as a fisherman, with a dark trench coat and a hook instead of a hand, begins to attack them one by one, threatening to discover their secret.

Its good performance at the box office gave the green light to the sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998). Then it came I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006), which had nothing to do with the predecessors. The original film made $125.58 million at the global box office with a budget of $17 million. More recently, Prime Video made a series based on the original film, which was canceled after one season aired.
