The premiere of 'Practical Magic 2' takes first place at the box office

During the past weekend, Warner Bros. brought the premiere of Practical Magic 2with the return of Sandra Bullock y Nicole Kidman as sisters and witches Sally and Gillian Owens, respectively.

But the Owens' potion lacked a little more of the magic touch.

And despite having taken first place at the box office in its theatrical release, the sequel, titled in our region Love spell: The magic continuesranked at the lower end of box office projections, with a debut of $30 million dollars in the national box office (4,146 theaters in the United States). At the international box office it added $16 million dollars (77 markets), for a global opening total of $46 million.

For some context, the original film's 1998 release was $13 million, which with adjustments for inflation would be equivalent to approximately $27 million in today's dollars. The original delivery Practical Magic It was a box office failure that over time became a cult film.

Practical Magic 2 It had a production cost of $75 million dollars. Perhaps the sequel will rise in the coming weeks or achieve cult status. Time will tell.

This is not an absolute disaster for WB, however, it does extend a bad streak for the studio after the releases of The End of Oak Street, Supergirl y The Bride!increasing the pressure on Digger by Alejandro G. Iñárritu with a considerable budget close to $130 million dollars, and on Dune: Part Three. The latter is almost guaranteed a good run in theaters if the pre-sales are any indication.

But let's close on a positive note.

Practical Magic 2 can boast of having debuted in first place, ending the six-weekend reign of Spider-Man: Brand New Day which had not left the number one spot since its release on July 31.

The plot places us back in a world enveloped in moonlight mischief and powerful ancient magic, following sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, struggling with their powers and the consequences of the family curse. Sally tries to lead a normal life, distancing herself from magic, but tragedy strikes when her husband dies. Gillian, on the other hand, lives a wild life and takes advantage of her magical abilities. The sisters become involved in an event where they fight to break the family curse.

The sequel is directed by Susanne Bier (Bird Box) and script Akiva Goldsman –coguionista of the original–, Georgia Pritchett y Kelly Marcel. The screenplay was adapted from the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman.

Bullock, Kidman, Dianne Wiest y Stockard Channing They reprise their roles from the first installment, with new additions that include Joey King (The Kissing Booth), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) –playing Bullock's daughters–, Lee Pace (Foundation), Xolo Maridueña (Blue Beetle, Cobra Kai), y Solly McLeod (The Dead Don’t Hurt).

The sequel is produced by Bullock and Kidman, and Denise Di Novi, producer of the original. Executive producers are Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Donald Sabourin, and author Alice Hoffman.
