“In May witness how the strangers became the strangers”is the invitation of Lionsgate to the audience in first trailer of The Strangers: Chapter 1the first installment of a trilogy inspired by the horror franchise The Strangersby the director Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea, Die Hard 2), and the scriptwriters Alan R. Cohen y Alan Freedland (The Freak Brothers, Due Date).
Return to the big screen The Strangers It was launched a year ago. It is based on the original 2008 cult film by Bryan Bertino, of which Harlin has confessed to being a fan.
It is believed that the first film, Chapter 1is a remake of the original – and certainly that appears to be according to what is seen in the trailer – with the sequels, Chapter 2 y Chapter 3expanding the story in new and unexpected ways.
The preview, which you find at the end of this note, introduces us to the leading couple played by Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale, Jane) y Froy Gutierrez (Cruel Summer, Hocus Pocus 2, Teen Wolf), giving life to Maya and Ryan, a newly engaged couple, who ventures on a road trip. When their car breaks down, they are forced to spend the night at a secluded Airbnb in the woods, where three masked strangers terrorize and attack them from dusk to dawn, without warning or reason.
Unlike Bertino's original film, the Chapter 1 couple looks happy. The trailer includes a new version of the iconic line “Because they were home,” replaced with “Because they are here.”
As we have already seen in previously released promotional material, the masks of the killers from the original film will continue to appear in the new trilogy.
Harlin previously commented on the trilogy:
“Sin trying to trivialize it or explain it too much, the second and third films are an exploration of where it came from [todo]. More than anything, they are an exploration of what could happen to a person, in this case, a young woman, who is the victim of such senseless violence. What effect does that have on you mentally and physically, and what is your journey after that? It's an exploration of that more than anything. And I think we'll answer a lot of the questions that fans of the original have and then go much further. At the end of the third film, there really are more questions than answers.
Lionsgate will release in theaters The Strangers: Chapter 1 on May 17, 2024.
