If someone asked me what my favorite album of 2024 was, my brain would probably go haywire, because it doesn't work in a ranking scheme and consequently neither do I. But if you asked me which album I listened to the most this year, the answer would come quickly and easily: Wrapped In cellophane.
The debut of the quartet Vessel, fellow countryman Omni and so is part of Atlanta's great new independent scene, it has been playing and continuing to play on my virtual record player without stopping since I first laid eyes on it, sometime in the first half of the year. And why, the imaginary someone would ask.
Maybe because Alex Tuisku's voice reminds me of the dear Kathleen Hanna, and her half-spoken way of singing – common to vocalists from other bands that I really like, like Dry CleanigWet Leg and inherited from Mark E Smith – I like it a lot, maybe because of the prominent bass, maybe because of the unbelievable saxophone that is present throughout the album, maybe because it lifts me up whenever I'm in the shit, maybe because it also brings to mind in different ways and in different songs Sleater Kinney from the 90s and B-52's, perhaps through “Telephone”, “What's inside” and “Some say”, in short, there are many 'maybes', and maybe (hahaha) if you take into account all these references it becomes your next addiction.
Listen to the stalk!
