'Wicked' surpasses Mamma Mia! as the highest-grossing musical adaptation in the world box office

After five weeks of exhibition in cinemas it was enough for Wicked from Universal Pictures to be crowned with a new record.

Wicked has surpassed Oh mama!another Universal film, to become in the highest-grossing adaptation of a musical of all time at the global box office.

The global collection until Sunday, December 29 is $634.4 million dollarswith $424.2 million dollars coming from the domestic box office, and $210.2 million dollars coming from the international box office.

The global box office Oh mama! (2008) is $611.4 million dollars.

Wicked It is also, the best theatrical adaptation of a musical in 46 international markets. It had previously become the biggest Broadway adaptation of all time at the United States box office, and the best box office for a Monday in November in history.

Current overseas performance outperforms Mamma Mia 2, Maleficent, The Little Mermaid and The Greatest Showman (excluding China) at the same launch point.

The top 5 foreign markets to date are the United Kingdom ($67 million), Australia ($24.8 million), Korea ($14.2 million), Germany ($11.8 million) and Mexico ($9.9 million).

Wicked opens in Japan on March 7.

The fantasy musical is directed by John M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights) with a hyphen Winnie Holzman (My So-Called Life) y Dana Fox (Cruella, New Girl) from the 2003 musical of the same name, which is itself based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire.

This is the first part of an adaptation that will consist of two parts.

Wicked tells the story of how a green-skinned young woman is framed by the Wizard of Oz and becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.

The cast is headed by Cynthia Erivo y Ariana Grandenext to Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Peter Dinklagey Marissa Bode.
