Lionsgate and the director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Hunstman, Ghost in the Shell) have the premiere of a new version of the cult classic on the horizon The Crow.
The reboot of The Raven It is described as a modern reimagining of James O'Barr's graphic novel, which was adapted to film in 1994 by director Alex Proyas and starring Brandon Lee, leaving an indelible mark on an entire generation and on the history of cinema. Proyas' original version is considered a cult classic, often remembered for its dark and melancholic aesthetic and alternative rock soundtrack. The film spawned three sequels and a television series. The series also marked Lee's last role, after he died after being accidentally shot while filming a scene for the film.
This new version stars Bill Skarsgård (saga IT, Barbarian) as Eric Draven, the singer and songwriter, FKA Twigs (Honeyboy) as Shelly Webster, Draven's fiancée, and Danny Huston (Succession) in an antagonistic role.
The plot centers on soulmates Eric (Skarsgård) and Shelly (FKA Twigs), who are brutally murdered when the demons of Shelly's dark past catch up to them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to exact ruthless revenge on her killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to right the wrongs.
In an interview with Empire, Sanders explains that his reimagining of The Raven It has nothing to do with Hollywood:
“There is nothing to do with Hollywood in this film. It is a very rudimentary independent film..”
Indeed, it is precisely because it deviated from a more conventional approach to O'Barr's source material that Sanders and his collaborators have found themselves “able to stay close to the center, the darkness and the violence that is in the graphic novel.”
As the director explains: “The only reason we were able to do that is because it's not a studio movie.”
The film's budget was $50 million.
And budget constraints were precisely the reason that allowed for a more optimal filmmaking, according to Sanders:
“You have to be more skilled in order to do things more efficiently, so that they have emotional resonance, and not just for show.”
In recent days, the Motion Picture Association (MPA), the organization in charge of giving ratings to all projects, gave the R rating at the reboot of The Crow by:
“Strong bloody violence, gore, language, sexuality/nudity and drug use.”
The rest of the cast is made up of Laura Birn (Foundation), Sami Bouajila (A Son), y Jordan Bolger (The Woman King).
Lionsgate to release reboot of The Raven in theaters the August 23, 2024.
