Netflix applied the guillotine of cancellation to That ‘90s Showsequel series to the successful sitcom That ‘70s Show, just over a month after Part 3 premiered on the streamer.

Kurtwood Smithactor in charge of playing Red Forman in both series, revealed the news through a publication on Instagram, in addition to announcing that The series will be offered to other networks/streamers.

  • This could in theory come to fruition, although it must be taken into account that Netflix original series that are canceled have many limitations to landing in a new house.

The first season of 10 episodes premiered in January 2023. It was later renewed to a second season of 16 episodes, which was divided into Part 2 (June 2024) and Part 3. This aforementioned Part 3 was the one that premiered on Netflix on last August.

Apparently, the audience was not what the streamer expected and he chose to cancel the series. The premiere of Part 2 last June had 1.8 million views in its first week of availability, while Part 3 had 1.6 million views in its first week and less than 1.4 million views in its second week.

The multi-camera comedy series format has not been very successful on Netflix, with only a few examples of success such as the case of Fuller House, The Ranchy The Upshaws.

That '90s Show took us back to Point Place, with Kurtwood Smith y Debra Jo Rupp reprising her roles as Red and Kitt Formanrespectively, now in their stage as grandparents. Smith and Rupp are executive producers of the sequel series.

Below is Smith's Instagram post translated into Spanish, accompanied by the original below:

“I have enjoyed every minute of being able to bring Grandpa Red to life for all of you. I've said it before, but it's worth mentioning again… this series had a lot of heart behind it and the most amazing cast, writers, directors, producers and crew an actor could hope to work with. Thank you for allowing Red and Kitty, your granddaughter, all of your grandchildren's friends and neighbors, the original cast members of That 70’s Show and all of our wonderful guest cast members will entertain you for two seasons. Stealing Red Forman's words… we're not going to be idiots… we're going to sell the show, because good grandparents would work hard for these kids to graduate from high school.”
