The AFI selects the 10 best films and series of 2024

He American Film Institute (AFI; for its acronym in English), selected the best 10 movies and series of the year 2024.

The listings reflect a diversity of genres, narratives, platforms and budgets. From blockbuster hits to acclaimed indie projects.

In the cinematographic field we find commented films such as Anora by Sean Baker, The Brutalist de Brady Corbet, A Complete Unknown by James Mangold, Dune: Part Two by Denis Villeneuve, Conclave de Edward Beger, Wicked by Jon M. Chu, the controversy Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard, Nickel Boys by RaMell Ross, and films by emerging filmmakers such as Sing Sing by Greg Kwedar, and A Real Pain de Jesse Eisenberg.

Most of these feature films are emerging as contenders for the 2025 Oscar in multiple categories.

Over the last decade, the ten best films selected by the AFI have been aligned with the Oscar best picture nominations, so the absence of projects like Gladiator II de Ridley Scott, The Room Next Door by Pedro Almodóvar, Blitz the Steve McQueen, María by Pablo Larraín, among others, raises doubts about his chances for the Academy Award.

On the television side, the AFI awarded Baby Reindeer from Netflix a special award. The list is dominated by television projects from HBO and Max, such as the case of Hacks, The Penguin y True Detective: Night Country. The favorite of many, Nobody Wants Thisis included in the Top 10.

The jury is made up of multiple critics, academics and film professionals. The AFI has the mission to “celebrate the arts of film and television.”

The honorees will meet on Friday, January 10, 2025 to be recognized at the annual AFI Awards private luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hillsan event favored by the entertainment community for its informal intimacy and inclusive recognition of excellence.
