HBO renews 'Dune: Prophecy' for a second season

HBO announced the renewal of the prequel series, Dune: Prophecyfor a second season. The news was revealed by the showrunner and executive producer Alison Schapkerand the protagonists Emily Watson (Small Things Like These, Chernobyl) y Olivia Williams (The Crown, The Sixth Sense), during a virtual press conference (via Deadline).

Dune: Prophecy takes us back to the science fiction universe Dune by author Frank Herbert, with a plot that addresses the origins of the Bene Gesserit order. It is set 10,000 years before the time of Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides.

The story reveals the origins of the witch brotherhood while delving into another politically tense chapter in the universe of Dune. Watson and Williams play biological sisters Valya Harkonnen and Tula Harkonnen, and members of this new brotherhood, the driving force of the Bene Gesserit.

In the films, Lady Jessica Atreides, played by Rebecca Fergusonhas ties to the Gesserit order. His spiritual talents, fostered in the order, have been passed on to his son, Paul Atreides (Chalamet).

The finale of the first season was broadcast last Sunday, December 22.

“The survival of the brotherhood is a very important part of the second season,” Schapker said during the virtual press conference.

The series is based on Sisterhood of Dune de Brian Herbert y Kevin J. Anderson.

The first season arrives in a year full of good news for fans of Herbert's literary material. The sequel was released in theaters in February. Dune: Part Two by Denis Villeneuve; A few months later it was confirmed that Villeneuve is working on the next installment, Dune: Messiahand now, before Christmas, it is confirmed that there will be a second season of Dune: Prophecy.

And although the series does not have the direct participation of Villeneuve and the screenwriter of the films DuneJon Spaihts, is directly linked to them.

Diane Ademu-John co-developed the series and is executive producer. Anne Foerster executive produces and directs several episodes, including the first. Jordan Goldberg, Mark Tobey, John Cameron, Matthew King, Scott Z. Burns and Spaihts are executive producers with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert.
