Netflix applied the guillotine to the musical comedy series Girls5Eva. The series will not have a fourth season on the platform.
This marks the second time the series has been cancelled. It originally aired on Peacock in 2021, where it was renewed for a second season in 2022. It was later canceled by the NBCUniversal-owned streamer and rescued by Netflix, which renewed it for a third season, which debuted on the streamer in March 2024. .
One of the protagonists, Busy Phillipswas responsible for sharing the news of the cancellation with the Girls5Eva audience, saying the following on her podcast Doing Her Best:
“[Girls5Eva] is dead. I say this because, fuck it. If Netflix doesn't do it, I will. I guess not enough people saw it or saw it the way it counts. Don't know. “Actually, I just don’t know.”
He continued: “To be fair, Netflix isn't saying it's dead, but they also don't have to say anything about it because the way the deal was structured when they gave it to Peacock was just for the season, for that third season. And that's why there is no time limit. Normally when you do a TV show, there's a contract and you have to tell the actors by a certain date or they're free to pursue other things first. But we didn't have that structured agreement. I know we would all kill to do more in any way, like a movie like the one they made with Kimmy Schmidt would be amazing, or a fourth and final season. But I think it probably isn’t.”
The series, created by Meredith Scardino, revolves around four women who were part of a girl group that faded into oblivion after becoming a one-hit band. When an up-and-coming rapper samples their hit song, the girls try to find success once again by setting up a reunion.
The cast includes Phillips, Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Daniel Breaker, Ashley Park, Andrew Rannells.
Executive producers include Scardino, Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, Jeff Richmond, David Miner, and Eric Gurian.
