He Writers Guild (WGA; Writers Guild of America) was scheduled to announce all the nominees for best original and adapted screenplay in the film and television categories, today, Thursday, January 9, 2025.

However, Hollywood is in a state of emergency as wildfires rage through Los Angeles County. From Pacific Palisades in northern LA, along the coast, to the San Fernando Valley, and near Pasadena, tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes.

Likewise, the film and television industry has had to take preventive measures, which include the cancellation of events such as the Critics Choice Awards (moving from January 12 to January 26), the AFI Awards on Friday, January 10, the BAFTA Tea Party on Saturday, January 11, multiple premieres including The Last Showgirl by Gia Coppola and Better Man by Michael Gracey, and the filming of television series such as Grey’s Anatomy, Hacksy Suits LAamong others.

The most recent cancellation to join the list comes from the WGA, the Writers Guild, who were scheduled to reveal the 2025 WGA Awards nominations this morning, but that announcement has been postponed to Monday, January 13.

An unusual wind storm combined with very dry conditions sparked numerous fires in Los Angeles on Tuesday, January 7. At least five fires in the Los Angeles area, including one in the Hollywood Hills, have burned more than 45 square miles and put about 179,000 people under evacuation orders, according to authorities.

The death toll increased to five. More than 1,300 structures have already burned and more than 60,000 structures were threatened Thursday as strong winds fanned flames in densely populated parts of Southern California. Three of the five fires burning Thursday morning were not at all contained, including the Palisades and Eaton fires, the two largest.
