The iconic filmmaker David Lynchwhich revolutionized cinema with a unique vision in film projects such as Mulholland Drive, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Lost Highwayand the television series Twin Peaksdied on the morning of this Thursday, January 16, at 78 years of age.
After a lifetime of smoking, he had been diagnosed with emphysema. The filmmaker revealed in 2024.
His death was announced by his family through a post on Facebook, saying the following:
“There is a big hole in the world now that he is no longer with us. But, as he said, 'Keep your eyes on the donut and not the hole.'”
After dedicating himself to painting and making animated short films for years, Lynch made his debut as a screenwriter and feature director with Eraserhead (1977), which became one of the midnight classics. He later made The Elephant Man (1980), nominated for 8 Oscars, including Best Director. The film focuses on a deformed fairground phenomenon in Victorian England who became a national celebrity.
In 1984 he released the adaptation of the science fiction novel Dune by Frank Herbert, which did not have much commercial success in movie theaters, however, over time it became a cult classic.
Lynch's consolidation would come next, with Blue Velvet (1986), the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, Wild at Heart (1990), the groundbreaking ABC television series, Twin Peaks (1990), Lost Highway (1997), Mulholland Drive (2001), which gave him the best director award at Cannes, and another Oscar nomination for best director, and finally, Inland Empire (2006).
In his latest works, Lynch focused on music video creation and music composition.
He is survived by two daughters and two sons.
