the universe Knives Out from the screenwriter and director Rian Johnsonthe third installment will premiere next month, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
With its world premiere held at the last Toronto Film Festival, Netflix will grant you two-week release in select US theaters starting November 26before its release in the streamer worldwide on December 12.
The “whodunnit” features the return of Daniel Craig playing Detective Benoit Blanc, in which he is described as “Benoit Blanc's most dangerous case so far.”
The plot deals with a murder in a church that Blanc tries to solve. For writer-director Johnson, writing this story was no easy task. He tells Empire Magazine:
“This has been without a doubt the most difficult script I have ever written. I grew up very Christian; I was not only raised going to church, but with a belief in God and a relationship with Christ as fundamental to the way I view the world around me. And I'm not anymore.
There are many people in my life that I love who are still religious, and there are things from that time that I still treasure. I have very complex feelings about this.”.
“That's the real reason why the script was so difficult to write,” he says of the themes. “It's something I take very seriously. I wanted to explore it with complete honesty, without falling into superficiality or, God forbid, morality or irreverence.”.
The story features an idealistic young priest named Jud Duplencity (played by Josh O’Connor of Challengers y The Crown), who is sent to help the charismatic and passionate Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin of Sicario), but it soon becomes evident that all is not well in the church.

In addition to Craig, O'Connor and Brolin, the star cast includes Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus), Andrew Scott (Ripley), Kerry Washington (Scandal), Glenn Close (Tehran), Jeremy Renner (Mayor of Kingstown), Mila Kunis (Bad Moms), Daryl McCormack (Twisters), (Sicario) y Thomas Haden Church (Twisted Metal).

Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returns for his most dangerous case yet in the third and darkest chapter of Rian Johnson's murder mystery novel. When young priest Jud Duplenticy (Josh O'Connor) is sent to help the charismatic and passionate Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin), it becomes clear that all is not well in the church.
Wicks' modest but devout group includes devout religious Martha Delacroix (Glenn Close), prudent gardener Samson Holt (Thomas Haden Church), tenacious lawyer Vera Draven (Kerry Washington), aspiring politician Cy Draven (Daryl McCormack), local doctor Nat Sharp (Jeremy Renner), the author of bestsellers Lee Ross (Andrew Scott) and concert cellist Simone Vivane (Cailee Spaeny).
After a sudden and seemingly impossible murder rocks the town, the lack of an obvious suspect prompts local police chief Geraldine Scott (Mila Kunis) to join forces with renowned detective Benoit Blanc to unravel a mystery that defies all logic.
Johnson produces the feature film alongside Ram Bergman, with Tom Karnowski as executive producer, and Leopold Hughes as co-producer.
The so-called “whodunit cinema” had a kind of resurgence with the release of the first film, which became the second highest-grossing original film of 2019, in addition to having earned the recognition of critics and the audience, and that of colleagues in the film industry, being recognized with an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay (Johnson).
After the great success of Knives OutNetflix Pagoda a Lionsgate for the distribution rights to the next two films under the moniker A Knives Out Mysteryfor the not inconsiderable amount of $450 million dollars. The sequel was released in December 2022 Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix, with a limited release in theaters in the US, the same strategy that the streamer will repeat with the third film, serving to comply with the Oscar Academy's requirement – to have screening in cinemas – for all those films seeking possible nominations.
