The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced that the broadcast rights of the Oscar Award were acquired by YouTube.

The service, owned by Google, obtained the rights to present the Academy Awards live starting in 2029according to information shared by the official AMPAS site.

The video platform known throughout the world, outbid other biddersincluding one of ABCthe network that has presented the most prestigious ceremony in the film industry since 1976. ABC, owned by Disney, has an agreement to present the Oscars until 2028. After the end of said agreement, it will be YouTube's turn to broadcast the Oscars around the world.

So, The first YouTube ceremony will be the 101st edition of the Oscar, with an agreement that will extend until 2033according to information shared by AMPAS this morning.

The acquisition by YouTube is a great move in its favor, since we find ourselves in times in which streaming platforms are increasingly betting on the transmission of live events and incorporating themselves into this business model for a global audience.

For example, TNT and HBO Max are responsible for broadcasting awards such as the Emmys and the Golden Globes, while Netflix broadcasts the SAG Awards, which were recently renamed the Actors' Awards.

WHAT DOES THE AGREEMENT WITH YOUTUBE INCLUDE?

This is access to unprecedented coverage for the global audience, especially for all those film buffs who enjoy the awards season, which culminates year after year with the Oscar ceremony.

Neal Mohan, CEO of YouTube stated in a press release:

An ABC Entertainment spokesperson explained:

ABC has been the proud home of the Oscars for more than half a century. We look forward to the next three broadcasts, including the gala's centenary celebration in 2028and we wish the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continued success.”

For their part, Bill Kramer, executive director of the Academy, and Lynette Howell Taylor, president of the Academy, added:
