Universal Pictures found the director of his next theatrical thriller, The Caretaker, with the signing of David Bruckner (The Night House, The Ritual).

Bruckner will write and direct the project, according to THR reports.

Based on the novel by Marcus Kliewer which will be published this April, the adaptation will star Sydney Sweeneycontinuing her trend of combining acting roles with production projects through her own production company.

Sweeney will produce the feature film with his company Fifty-Fifty Films, alongside Michael Bay and Brad Fuller of Platinum Dunes, and Scott Glassgold of 12:01 Films.

This is Kliewer's second book, following his successful debut, We Used To Live Herewhich positioned him as an emerging voice in literary horror.

In The CaretakerMacy Mullins (Sweeney), a financially challenged young woman takes a temporary job as a caretaker at an isolated home on the Oregon coast, only to discover that she must follow a series of increasingly disturbing rules to contain a reality-warping force, a force that may already be spiraling out of her control.

Universal appears to be accelerating the project, taking advantage of growing demand for thriller adaptations and the growing box office success of Sweeney, who is fresh off starring in the thriller The Housemaid (The employee in our region) with Amanda Seyfried.

Bruckner is an experienced horror filmmaker who has directed The Ritual (2017), The Night House (2020), the reboot of Hellraiser (2022), the series Creepshowand film segments like Southbound (2015), V/H/S (2012) y V/H/S/85 (2023).
