science fiction drama Klara and the Sun from Sony 3000 Pictures and Spyglass Media debuted its official trailer. The project adapts the bestseller of the same name by the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017, Kazuo Ishiguro.
Klara and the Sunfor its title in our region, co-written and directed by the Oscar winner, Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok), stars Jenna Ortega (Wednesday, Scream 5), Amy Adams (Cape Fear, Arrival), Natasha Lyonne (Poker Face, Orange is the New Black) Steve Buscemi (Wednesday, Roommates), Simon Baker (Scarpetta, The Mentalist), Michelle Ang (Play Dirty), David McKenzie (Leviticus), Maria Thariay Aran Murphyson of Cillian Murphy.
The film introduces Klara (Ortega), an Artificial Friend (AA) who just wants to find the perfect home. Lyonne plays a salesgirl who encourages Klara and her companions, an old-fashioned AA group, assuring them that they can still find a home despite rapid technological advances that make them obsolete.
“If they choose me, how will I know if I and myself are compatible?” Klara asks the manager of Lyonne's store, who replies: “Remember everything you've learned and, with luck, they will come to love you like another member of the family or the family pet.”
Josie (Tharia) chooses Klara even though it is an old and outdated model, as her mother (Adams) tells her, who doesn't want to spend money on the robot. But Josie thinks Klara is special. And what's more, it's on special with a 20% discount.

When Klara meets Josie, they immediately feel a special connection. Josie has a strained relationship with her mother (Adams) and they have suffered great loss, but Klara's innocent fascination and unwavering loyalty begin to heal the family and illuminate Josie's complex world. Klara heads to the “Glorious Sun” and uses it to recharge. Josie's mother threatens Klara by telling her that it is still “under warranty” and that they can always return it to the store. When something happens to Josie, her mother and the nurse close the door on Klara.
“AAs are like a blank canvas,” says Klara. “We leave the laboratory with the intelligence of a small child and then we learn everything from our humans.”
Waititi co-wrote the script with Dahvi Waller (Mrs. America, Desperate Housewives, Mad Men), based on Ishiguro's novel published in 2021.

Klara and the Sun premieres in theaters October 23.
