After some twists and turns, which included the spinoff SOULM8TEof the universe M3GANfinally gets a definitive release date, several months after the film was pulled from the release schedule.
The news becomes official with the launch of the official trailer of SOULM8TEdescribed as a “thriller '90s-style sci-fi erotica with a 'new technological twist.'”
the movie tells the story of an engineer who, after the death of his wife, tests a new AI for a technology company. In an attempt to create his new partner, he turns a harmless love robot into a deadly soulmate.
The cast is headed by Lily Sullivan, Arty Froushan, Valerie Hanna, Claudia Doumit, David Rysdahl, Oliver Coopery Ossian Perret.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PREMIERE OF SOULM8TE AND WHEN CAN WE SEE IT?
First, a little context.
Its theatrical release was originally scheduled for January 2, 2026, but in December 2025, a month before its release, Universal Pictures withdrew it completely from the release calendar and found a new distributor.
This was due to the sequel's disappointing box office performance. M3GAN 2.0which hit theaters in the summer of 2025, failed to connect with audiences by adopting an action-movie-like change in style. Terminator 2leaving aside the horror factor and everything I had liked about the first film M3GANreleased in theaters in January 2023, which enjoyed exceptional word of mouth, and a social media marketing campaign.
To get a better perspective of the box office impact, the first installment grossed $180 million at the global box office, against a budget of $12 million, while the sequel grossed $39 million worldwide, against an approximate budget of $15 to $25 million.
That is why for the spinoff we thought about skip the theatrical release, and go directly to Digital format. will be launched on digital platforms starting August 1via Universal Pictures.
SOULM8TE seeks to offer something different, starting because this is the first installment of the R-rated franchiseleaning more towards violent and sensual thriller than comedy, something that is clear in the trailer.
The screenwriter and director is Kate Dolan (You Are Not MY Mother). The script is based on a story by James Wan, Ingrid Bisu and Jordan.
In an interview with EW, Dolan said about the Digital premiere:
“As a filmmaker, my passion is movies and I always look forward to a theatrical release. But I must say that some of my favorite movies, the ones that really made me fall in love with cinema, I saw mostly on television, on different channels, or on DVD or VHS. My experience watching them at home was just as rewarding. There is a huge audience for this movie, whether at home or in the theater.”
The producers are James Wan y Jason Blum from Blumhouse Atomic Monster, executive produced by Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Ingrid Bisu.
