“It's about how we sometimes feel when it's over, how the end of a relationship can destroy our ability to have hope in love. In the song I say, 'I'll keep on dancing until I'm dead,' which means I recognize it and I'm going to move on. I also say, 'I'll take back control.'”

“In the middle of the song, he says over and over again, 'Do the Dead Dance, the Dead Dance.' And that's when the song stops being just about the relationship. It becomes a conversation about having fun with friends after you've been through something hard and wonderful.”
