Sony Pictures’ TriStar Pictures will release The Woman King in theaters on September 16, 2022 in the United States, and on September 22 in Mexico.
Ahead of the release of this long-awaited film that will bring to the big screen the true story of the Agoji warriors, hand in hand with the co-writer and director Gina Prince- Bythewood (The Old Guard, Love & Basketball), the marketing campaign offers us a new look at its protagonist Viola Davis, playing General Nanisca (leader of the Amazons of the Kingdom of Dahomey) who led her warriors to fight the French and neighboring tribes who violated their honor, enslaved people, and threatened to destroy everything they fought for. In this promotional clip available below, we see part of the preparation of the leader and her warriors.
The film will offer the audience an opportunity to learn an untold story, while also serving as a celebration of a group in society that is often marginalized or made invisible.

These events took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey, a powerful state in West Africa that existed from approximately 1600 to 1900, distinguished by its all-female African military unit, known as the Amazons or Dahomey Amazons. The kingdom of Dahomey faced great attacks, not only from the French but also from neighboring tribes. It is currently the coastal region of the Republic of Benin.
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
A historical epic inspired by real events that occurred in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states in Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Davis is joined in the cast by Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die, Captain Marvel), John Boyega (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Detroit) y Help Mbedu (The Underground Railroad).
Prince-Bythewood co-wrote with Dana Stevens (Blink, City of Angels, For Love of the Game, Safe Haven). Mbedu plays Nawi, daughter of Nanisca. Davis stars in and produces the feature film.
In an interview with Empire, Davis recently commented:
“This movie is my answer to that. This movie isn’t even my respectful response to that. It is an illustration of the unsurpassed beauty, strength, vulnerability, femininity, and sheer power of the dark-skinned black woman. It’s our way of redefining who we are. And I think from the first moment you walk into this movie, you’re going to see it in a very beautiful way.”
