“An Abyss” premiered in Leipzig last fall. The immersive sound and dance performance deals with the multiple crises of our time using strong images and atmospheric sounds. We have the recap video in advance.
“An Abyss” could be experienced for the first time at ZiMMT Leipzig on September 30th and October 1st, 2023. The full-length piece fuses electronic sounds, dance and light in a special 3D set-up. It was created in collaboration between the Leipzig musician and composer Philipp Rumsch, the dancers and choreographers Sophie Vergères and David Lagerqvist from Switzerland and Sweden.
In “An Abyss” the trio transfers the current moods of a society and environment in 24/7 crisis mode into close-up, impressive and depressing images and sounds. Conditions of repetition, chaos, fatigue and powerlessness are expressed quite dramatically. Conditions that seem omnipresent in times of multiple crises.
But “An Abyss” doesn’t just stop at dystopia, the performance also lets confidence and hope shine, revealing warm moments. If you would like to get an impression of this, you should definitely watch Benjamin Büttner's video. Here the intensity is increased even further by super close shots and a permanent glow around the characters. An impressive teaser for the live experience of “An Abyss”:
Philipp Rumsch, Sophie Vergères and David Lagerqvist want to go on tour with the piece in 2024 and 2025. Then hopefully there will be another opportunity to experience the performance live. At the same time, Philipp Rumsch is working on an album version of the music in Dolby Atmos, which is scheduled to be released later this year.
