'Black Panther 3': David Jonsson is announced as the new Black Panther

Other news announced by Marvel Studios in its panel in Hall H of the San Diego Comic-Con 2026 is related to the next solo installment of Black Panther.

The study officially confirmed the incursion of David Johnson as the new Black Panther in Black Panther 3playing the son of T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman). The plot will follow Jonsson's character, Prince T'Challa II, as he transitions to adulthood, after being introduced as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).

Ryan Coogler returns to direct the third installment, while Letitia Wright y Winston Duke will reprise their roles as Shuri and M'Baku, respectively.

Wright took over from his late co-star Boseman as Black Panther in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Boseman, who played T'Challa in the first movie Black Panther (2018), died of colon cancer at age 43 in 2020, while Coogler was working on the sequel. The character of T'Challa II was introduced as the son of T'Challa and Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) in Wakanda Forever.

Prior to Black Panther 3we will see Wright and Duke reprise their roles as Shuri and M'Baku in Avengers: Doomsdaywith a theatrical release scheduled for December 18 of this year.

Jonsson has starred in film projects such as Alien: Romulus (2024) y The Long Walk (2025), based on the literary work of Stephen King. He was also part of the first two seasons of the HBO series, Industry.

The first film of Black Panthergrossed $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office and featured Boseman, Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Forrest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira and Angela Bassett in the cast. It earned seven Oscar nominations, including best picture, being the first superhero film to do so. The film won three Oscars: best costume design, best production design and best original score.

The sequel, Wakanda Forevergrossed $859 million worldwide upon its release in 2022 and had one of the most profitable post-pandemic opening weekends, with a worldwide gross of $331 million. The film was nominated for five Oscars, and Angela Bassett's nomination for best supporting actress marked the first time that an actor from a Marvel film was nominated for an Academy Award.
