A tennis tournament, three sports professionals, and plenty of steamy drama to discover in the romantic sports drama Challengers of Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria, Bones and All), starring the Emmy, Critics and Golden Globe winner, Zendaya (Euphoria).
Guadagnino’s most recent feature film released the first official trailer, which follows Zendaya playing Tashi, a professional tennis player, who during a game meets friends Patrick and Art, played by Josh O’Connor (The Crown) y Mike Faist (West Side Story). The three of them get involved in a love trio giving way to rivalries.
Years later, we see Tashi with her husband, Art, as they meet up with their old rival, Patrick. Tashi convinces Art to participate in the “Challengers” tennis tournament, and things get complicated when she realizes that she will have to face Patrick, Tashi’s ex-best friend and ex-boyfriend.
The film is titled challenging in our country, where it will be distributed by Warner Bros.
“From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Defiant stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and an unapologetic force of nature for her game on and off the court. Married to a down-on-his-luck champion (Mike Faist – West Side Story), Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a shocking turn when she must go up against failed Patrick (Josh O’Connor – The Crown), a former best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend. As her past and present collide, and tensions rise, Tashi must wonder how much it will cost to win.
Zendaya trained for three months with professional tennis coach Brad Gilbert, in preparation for the role. Gilbert also served as a consultant on the film.
Guadagnino directs the script of Justin Kuritzkes (Ticklish). Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross compose the soundtrack.
Amy Pascal and Guadagnino produce, with Bernard Bellew and Kevin Ulrich serving as executive producers.
Warner Bros. will release Challengers in theaters on September 14, 2023 in Mexico and the rest of Latin America. MGM will handle its distribution in the US.
