The mythological action epic The Odissey of Christopher Nolanwhich adapts Homer's poem, already has its official classification.

The Motion Picture Association (MPA)the organization in charge of granting age ratings to all Hollywood film projects, awarded The Odyssey the Rated R for reasons that have not been revealed (via Variety).

We can speculate that it could be due to bloody battles, violent deaths, and graphics.

What is certain is that this will not be news celebrated by Nolan's younger audiences, who must be accompanied by an adult to be able to enter theaters to see the latest from the Oscar-winning filmmaker. The R rating is also somewhat unusual for a project designed for the summer movie season, which often seeks the PG that allows it to reach as many audiences as possible. Nolan's previous film, Oppenheimerwas also Rated R, and was also released on the big screen during the summer – in the northern hemisphere – and stood out with critics and audiences, grossing more than a billion dollars at the box office worldwide, as part of the Barbenheimer phenomenon.

According to media reports, The Odyssey has a budget of $250 million dollarsentering the list of the most expensive R-rated movies of all time, ranking above Joker: Folie à Deux ($190 million), but below Deadpool & Wolverinewhich is said to have had a huge production cost of more than $530 million.

This same week, Universal Pictures It started with the pre-sale of The Odyssey in the United States. The project will be launched in all Premium Large formatsincluding of course, IMAX. Based on the ancient epic poem by Homer, The story revolves around Odysseus, king of Ithaca, on his perilous journey home after the Trojan Warexploring themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning, and fighting against divine will.

During his journey, the protagonist faces the cyclops Polyphemus, the mermaids, the nymph Calypso and the witch goddess Circe in the treacherous oceans that separate him from his native island and his wife Penelope, who breaks up a wedding procession that she weaves every night in case one of the suitors who have taken over her home ends up marrying her if her husband does not return. His memory is also guarded by his son Telemachus. The story also includes gods such as Athena, Poseidon, and Zeus.

The star cast also includes Tom Holland like Telemachus, Anne Hathaway like Penelope, Robert Pattinson (The Drama) like Antinous, Lupita Nyong'o (A Quiet Place: Day One) as Helen of Troy, Zendaya (The Drama) like Athena, and Charlize Theron (Apex) like Calypso.

Filming took place in Morocco and Sicily, specifically on Favignana Island, a place where according to scholars, it served for Odysseus's wanderings in Homer's epic. It is believed to be the place where Homer imagined that Odysseus would disembark with his various tribulations to roast goats and stock up on food. The island, also known as “the island of the goats” is part of the Egadi Islands archipelago, off the northwest coast of Sicily.

The production used new technology IMAX and equipment never used before, and it has already made history by becoming the first narrative feature film filmed entirely with IMAX cameras. What does it mean? While filming was previously limited to filming action scenes in IMAX mainly, due to how noisy the format's cameras are for filming dialogues close to the actor, Nolan and company created a new casing for the IMAX moviecall blimpto significantly reduce noise.

The feature film is produced by Nolan along with his associate and wife, Emma Thomasfor their production company, Syncopy. Thomas Hayslip is executive producer.

The film reaches cinemas on July 16, 2026 worldwide. It will include IMAX theaters, IMAX 70mm, 70mm, 35mm, Dolby Cinema, D-Box, and Premium Large formats.
