The long-awaited musical fantasy Wickedis currently in theaters enjoying much commercial and critical success.
The film by director Jon M. Chu, stars Cynthia Erivo y Ariana Grandewho have been in the headlines in recent days for rumors on social networks such as TikTok and Reddit, which indicated that the actresses received different salaries for their co-starring roles.
A Universal Pictures spokesperson sent the following statement to the media refuting the rumors:
“The reports about the salary disparity between Cynthia and Ariana are completely false and based on material from the Internet. The women received equal pay for their work on Wicked.”
Other sources familiar with the situation confirmed to THR that the actresses received the same salary for their work on the musical film.
Wicked: Part I with script Winnie Holzman (My So-Called Life) y Dana Fox (Cruella, New Girl) based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, tells the story of how a young green-skinned girl is framed by the Wizard of Oz and becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Erivo plays Elphaba and Grande plays Glinda.
This is the first part of an adaptation that will consist of two parts. Wicked: Part II will be released in theaters on November 21, 2025.
The cast is made up Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Peter Dinklagey Marissa Bode.
Since its premiere on November 22, Wicked dominates the box office. This same week it broke the record for the best domestic box office for a Monday in November in history, collecting $15.8 million dollars that day, surpassing the figures achieved on Mondays in November for films such as Frozen II ($12.7 mdd, November 25, 2019), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($12.3 mdd, November 25, 2013), Heavy rain ($11.3 million, November 12, 2012), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($11.1 mdd, November 14, 2022).
Wicked collects $162.5 mdd at the global box office ($112.5 mdd domestic, and $50 mdd internationally).
