In 2021, the director David Lowery and the company A24 released the epic fantasy The Green Knight, an adaptation of Sir Gawain’s Arthurian legend, which became a critical favorite. During the summer of 2022, Lowery returned to his version of Camelot, making the short film Oak Thorn & The Old Rose of Lovewhich was made exclusively for the blu-ray collector’s edition of The Green Knight.

The 20-minute short is starring Jackie Earle Haley and Sylvia Hoeksinterpreting entities that possess great knowledge that begin to share their learning with each other.

The story has no explicit ties to Green Knight, which stars Dev Patel as Gawain, however, the story is set in the same beautifully rendered version of Camelot as seen in Lowery’s original film and is based on an Arthurian tale.

In an interview with Collider, Lowery comments:

“I had already been thinking about adapting this particular story, and as we were looking for ways to make the Blu-ray more special, I thought it would be nice to have a movie attached to the disc. I love physical media and I loved the idea of having this short film that would never be released online, that would only be available on the big screen or on this disc. I’m sure someone will hack it right away, but in theory this short film is a purely physical object.”

A24 launched the collector’s edition of The Green Knight on November 30, 2022.

In addition to the short film, the edit includes commentary by Lowery, a behind-the-scenes look at the production, a short film about the film’s soundtrack, a featurette exploring visual effects and costumes, and deleted scenes.
