Two Scream Queens and Final Girls of modern horror cinema join forces in a new slasher film project, Riverwhich excites fans of the genre.
We talk about Jane Levy (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) y Jessica Rothe (saga Happy Death Day), protagonists of this new slasher horror proposal that marks the feature film debut of the writer and director Joshua Giulianoand which just celebrated its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF).
After their visit to TIFF, Variety revealed the first official looks at the “beautiful and brutal” slasher of Independent Film Company y Shudder.

The plot of Riverfollows three estranged brothers who reunite in their hometown after the death of their father. They prepare to spread his ashes in their favorite place, located on a remote river, but when their boat breaks down, the trip becomes a nightmare come true.
Stranded miles from any help and without cell reception, they soon realize they are being stalked by a faceless killer who emerges from the woods. To survive the night, the brothers must leave their old grudges behind and fight together against an implacable and almost mythical terror.
In addition to Levy and Rothe, the cast includes DiLiegro data (Prey) y Max Mattern (Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy).
Variety previews: “Striking a precise balance between evoking the signature elements of classic slashers and deliberately subverting expectations, the work is reminiscent of some of director Joshua Giuliano's favorite '70s films—such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre y Halloween—without being redundant.”
“I wanted to make the kind of slasher movie that I myself wanted to see,” Giuliano tells the outlet. “Something stripped down to its essential elements. To me, slasher movies are, at their core, simple and primal. They're about a group of human characters pursued by a killer. They're about the relentlessness of death, the pursuit of death, and sometimes the inevitability of death.”
The project was announced in November 2025, during its post-production.
