With filming completed prior to the Union strikes, Joker: Folie à Deux from the director Todd Phillipscontinues to spoil the audience with a new promotional image focused on the return of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker, shown in the center of the cold image with rain falling on his face, while surrounded by four umbrellas highlighted by their bright colors in play with who the Joker is.

The acclaimed JOKER (2019) by Phillips follows Arthur Fleck and his journey to becoming the crime clown, serving as the iconic villain’s origin story, unfolding its plot in 1980s Gotham City.

  • The literal translation of Folie à Deux is in English Madness for Two, and in Spanish Madness for two. But it’s also a term for “shared psychosis” or “shared delusional disorder,” which could be a direct reference to Joker and Quinn.
  • Joker is known for his on-again, off-again abusive relationship with Harley Quinn, his psychiatrist at the mental institution known as Arkham Asylum, who falls in love with him and becomes his sidekick and partner in crime.
  • Filming began in early December 2022 in Los Angeles, CA. Production later moved to NYC, where it spent around three to four weeks filming.
  • This is one of the few projects that has not suffered changes, cancellations or modifications after the merger of Warner Bros. Discovery(details here).

The first film grossed $335.4 million and, worldwide, is the highest-grossing R-rated film in history with $1.007 billion. Joker won two Oscars: Best Actor (Phoenix) and Original Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir). The film was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Phillips for Best Director. By November 2019, a few weeks after the film’s theatrical release, WB gave the green light to the sequel about the DC villain.
