To make these French Toasts, follow the step-by-step preparation method using the ingredients below:

Ingredients

  • 1 stale baguette or French bread (from the day before is best)

  • 2 cups of milk

  • 3/4 cup of sugar

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla essence

  • 2 tablespoons port wine (optional)

  • 4 eggs

  • Vegetable oil for frying

  • Powdered sugar and cinnamon for sprinkling

Directions

  • Cut the bread into slices about 2 cm thick.
If you prefer, remove the skins from the slices.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and port wine (if using).
Stir well to dissolve the sugar.
  • Dip each slice of bread into the milk mixture, letting them soak for about 30 seconds on each side.
Make sure each slice is completely covered in the mixture.
  • In another bowl, beat the eggs.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add enough vegetable oil to fry the french toast.
  • Dip each slice soaked in milk into the beaten eggs, covering both sides.
  • Place the slices of bread in the heated skillet and fry for a few minutes on each side, until golden and crispy.
Be sure to turn them gently so they don’t break.
  • Remove the french toasts from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  • In a shallow dish, combine powdered sugar and cinnamon to taste.
  • Dip the fried french toast in the cinnamon-sugar mixture, covering both sides.
  • Serve the french toast hot or at room temperature.
They are delicious both on their own and with honey, chocolate sauce or jam.
