Gosling is a cracker. I say that with a lot of respect. We spent a lot of time last year doing 'Starfighter,' and when Ryan started talking about this character, I thought, 'Let's go!'. See you in 2028!”

Gosling will be the second actor to play the Spirit of Vengeance in a film, after Nicolas Cage played the intrepid biker in two Sony Pictures films. The character was also played by Gabriel Luna as Robbie Reyes in Agents of SHIELDin a role reinvented for the series once the rights reverted to Marvel Studios. Luna was set to reprise the role in a standalone series for Hulu, but the project was canceled in 2019.

Ghost Rider was first adapted to film in 2007, starring Nicolas Cage as motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze. In the comics and in the movie that tells his origins, Johnny sells his soul to the devil Mephisto to cure his father's cancer. As usually happens in deals with the devil, Mephisto heals Johnny's father, but he dies in an accident during a stunt. Johnny then teams up with a supernatural demon called the Spirit of Vengeance and is able to transform into a flaming skeleton biker. He also possesses super strength, wields flaming chain whips, and can force someone to experience the emotional pain he has inflicted on others with his Gaze of Penance.

The sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeancepremiered in 2011. As a curious fact, Eva Mendesan actress and Gosling's long-time partner, starred in the first film.

In 2022, Gosling publicly revealed his interest in the character, while denying speculation that linked him to the MCU at the time, for the role of Nova.
