The HBO anthology series, True Detectivehas just been renewed to season 5, with the return of Issa López, creator of True Detective: Night Country.

López will take over the fifth season as part of a new overall deal signed with HBO, according to reports from Variety.

The news about the renewal comes just a few days after the broadcast of the season four finale, which broke the record as the most watched episode of Night Country, with 3.2 million viewers in the same night. Previously, it was revealed that Night Country broke the record as the most watched season of the HBO anthology, with an average of 12.7 million viewers across all platforms (HBO and HBO Max/Max).

In Night CountryLópez served as showrunner, creator, director of all episodes, and executive producer, taking the baton as head writer and producer from series creator Nic Pizzolato.

Season four starred two-time Oscar winner, Jodie Fosterand the boxer and actress Kali Reis (Catch the Fair One).

In a statement to the media obtained by Variety, López explains:

“From its conception to its release, 'Night Country' has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision throughout, and the idea of ​​bringing to life a new incarnation of 'True Detective 'With Casey, Francesca and the whole team it's a dream come true. I can't wait to go back.'

The outlet reports that the return of Foster and Reis is not in the plans, since the anthology has featured a new group of actors in each of its seasons.
