About ten years ago, two film students from Stuttgart made their way to various hotspots of the German club scene to find out the local, socio-cultural signatures and codes. Now is the Leipzig premiere.

Granted, it’s a very late premiere. The film came out in 2016. We had already reported on the film work in 2014, but then the result was no longer on the screen. For “Housenation – A musical journey through Germany” Chris Gebert and Patrick Gängler were on the road in Stuttgart, Leipzig, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt/Offenbach. There they spoke to one or two scene protagonists and always asked them 20 sociologically influenced questions. The documentary wanted to get to the bottom of the peculiarities of the respective local scene.

Next Thursday, August 24th, “Housenation” will be shown in Leipzig cinemas for the first time. From 9 p.m. in the summer cinema at the Plagwitz market hall. After the film there is also a discussion with the two filmmakers and Filburt, who was asked about Leipzig.

Of course, a lot has happened in club culture since 2016 – nationally and in Leipzig. In this respect, “Housenation” is more to be understood as an interesting testimony of the tens of years. A time without pandemic and inflation challenges, without TikTok. Some of the sociological ideas are certainly still valid today.
