The cast of the next installment of The Karate Kid of Sony Pictures It already has a new member. According to THR reports, Joshua Jackson joins the cast of the film in an unknown role, described as “one of the main characters.”

Jackson joins the protagonist Ben Wang (American Born Chinese), and the returns of Jackie Chan y Ralph Macchio as Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso, respectively. The coming-of-age will continue the mythology of the original franchise.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the new installment will bring the story to the East Coast and will focus on a teenager from China (Wang) who finds strength and direction through martial arts and a mentor (or two). tough but wise.

This will mark the first film role in almost ten years for Jackson, an actor best known for the youth series Dawson’s Creekand the science fiction series Fringe. Other of his television projects are The Affair, Little Fires Everywhereand more recently the series Fatal Attraction from Paramount+, and Dr. Death by Peacock. His known film roles include The Mighty Ducks, The Skulls, Urban Legendy Cruel Intentionswhile her last film appearance was in the romance drama, Sky (2015).

Jonathan Entwistle (I’m Not Okay With This, The End of the F***ing World) directs the feature film written by Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day).

The project announced the return of Macchio and Chan last November. Macchio played Daniel LaRusso in the original film, The Karate Kid (1984), and the two sequels in 1986 and 1989. He also took it up again in the Netflix series, Cobra Kai, which will premiere its final season this year. Chan, for his part, gave life to Mr. Han in the 2010 reboot, The Karate Kid.

Karen Rosenfelt (Dopesick, Me Before Yousaga Twilight) produces the feature film.

Sony Pictures will release Karate Kid on December 13, 2024.
