Bad news to all the Little Monsters who were eagerly awaiting Oscars Sunday 2023.
It has just been confirmed that Lady Gaga will not attend the ceremony to interpret the official theme of Top Gun: Maverick“Hold My Hand”nominated in the category for best original song in the 95th edition of the golden statuette.
Glen Weiss, executive producer and showrunner of the Oscars, confirmed the news during a press conference of the creative team of the ceremony. The reason for the absence of the singer and actress four times nominated for an Oscar –and winner for best original song for “Shallow”– it is because is filming the sequel Joker: Madness for Two.
“We invite the five nominees. We have a great relationship with Lady Gaga and her team. She is in the middle of filming a movie right now.. Here, we are honoring the film industry and what it takes to make a movie after a lot of back and forth… It didn’t seem like she could deliver a performance of the caliber that we are used to with her and that she is used to do. So, she won’t be performing on the show.”
The rest of the nominees for best original song will be present on stage at the Academy Award ceremony performing their respective songs: Rihanna (Lift Me Up), Sofia Carson y Diane Warren (Applause), Stephanie Hsu, David Byrne y Son Lux (This Is a Life), y Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava Naatu Naatu.
When she was nominated, Gaga took to social media to share her gratitude saying:
“Thank you so much to the Academy for nominating my song ‘Hold My Hand’ for an Oscar this year! Writing this song for the movie ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was a profound and powerful experience that I will never forget. Very grateful for the magic of music and cinema. I’m on set filming now, all my love to the Little Monsters!”
As mentioned, Gaga is filming the sequel to Joker, by director Todd Phillips, and the return of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker. Gaga would be interpreting a new version of Harley Quinn, in this sequel that will have musical elements. The film is set to be released in theaters on October 9, 2024.
