Maika Monroe on 'Longlegs': 'The beginning of a new generation of horror'

We are now very close to the long-awaited release of one of the most anticipated horror projects of the year, Longlegs from the screenwriter and director Osgood Perkinsalso know as Oz Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter).

The distribution company, NEONwhich has done an extraordinary job in promoting the project with a marketing campaign that has managed to keep the mystery surrounding it, has just release a featurette focused on the protagonist, Nice Monroewho talks about what a project like this means Longlegs.

Monroe plays FBI agent Lee Harker, who is on the trail of the serial killer nicknamed The Man Downstairs, played by Nicolas Cage.

“Longlegs is pushing the needle towards horror films in the same way that it did It Follows when he left.

“The way Oz tells this story creates a sense of nostalgia but also something unique that I don’t think people have seen before.

“The use of cinematography, sound design and acting, made you have this kind of visceral feeling that you don't feel every day.

“And it seems that this is the beginning of a new generation of horror.”

People say that Longlegs it is “in the line of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers.” Many of the critics who have already had the opportunity to see the film, do not stop comparing it with the classic The Silence of the Lambs.

Monroe and Cage have been involved in numerous audience-favorite horror film projects. Monroe has starred in It Follows –which has the sequel underway They Follow–, The Guest, Significant Otherand more recently, Watcher. Cage, for his part, is remembered for Renfield, Pig, y Mandy.

SYNOPSIS:

“FBI Agent Lee Harker (Monroe) is assigned to a serial killer case that takes unexpected turns, revealing evidence of the occult. Harker discovers a personal connection to the killer and must stop him before he strikes again.”

Alicia Witt (Urban Legend, I Care a Lot), Blair Underwood (Origin, American Crime Story), Vanessa Walsh (Murdaugh Murders: The Movie) y Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) complete the cast.

The film won the R rating by the MPA for:

“Bloody violence, disturbing images and some language.”

Perkins shot the film in Vancouver in 2023, and had a screening at the European Film Market (EFM) where it was acquired by NEON.

The producers are Cage with his production company Saturn Films, Dan Kagan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Dave Caplan, and Chris Ferguson.

NEON will premiere Longlegs In theaters July 12, 2024 in the U.S.In Mexico we will have to wait a little longer, it will be distributed by Diamond Films under the title Longlegs: Soul Collectorand will premiere it In theaters on August 29.
