The long-awaited live-action reboot of Masters of the Universe from Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films, hit theaters last Friday, resulting in extremely disappointing numbers.

The director's film Travis Knight (Bumblebee, Kubo and the Two Strings), was placed in second place at the box office in the national box office –behind Scary Movie– raising $29.3 million dollars, while in the international market it collected $25 million dollars, from 86 markets, for a $54.3 million global debut.

This is not a promising start for a film with a highly recognized IP, and a project that had a approximate budget between $170 million dollars and $200 million dollarswithout marketing costs.

The above would be putting the Masters of the universesince theatrical releases need to gross 2.5 times their production cost to break even. With a weak global premiere of $54.3 million, the film would be shaping up to become a summer box office flop, and of the year.

WHAT WENT WRONG?

While critics, and fans of the IP, have welcomed the new adaptation, everything seems to indicate that the general audience has not been impressed.

The team of creatives and producers who made the project possible could have taken into account that Masters of the Universe It's not exactly a popular IP outside of those who grew up with the '80s animated series, who are the largest fan base, nor does it have the global cultural impact of other franchises, so it might be difficult for contemporary audiences to connect with the jokes and other comedy elements.

The other element that we must highlight is the competition at the box officewith two indie horror projects that are sweeping the box office, Obsession y Backroomsand the return of a new Scary Movie. In addition to other attractive proposals that continue in cinemas doing great numbers, such as the case of Michael y The Devil Wears Prada 2. This week, in addition, it premieres Disclosure Daywhich marks Steven Spielberg's return to the science fiction and UFO genre.

The main cast includes Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You) as He-Mannext to Camila Mendes (Riverdale) like the warrior Don't wait, Alison Brie as the villain Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Morena Baccarin (Greenland, Deadpool) as The Sorceress, Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) as robot, James Purefoy (The Recruit) as King Randory Jared Leto (Morbius) as Skeletor.

In the live-action of Masters of the universe:

“After 15 years apart, the Sword of Power leads Prince Adam (Galitzine) back to Eternia, where he discovers that his home has been destroyed by the evil rule of Skeletor (Leto).

To save his family and his world, Adam must join forces with his closest allies, Teela (Mendes) and Duncan/Man-at-Arms (Elba), and embrace his true destiny as He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe.”
