Mike Flanagan to direct new 'The Exorcist' for Blumhouse

Blumhouse has made it official. Mike Flanagan will write, direct and produce “a radical new vision” of a new installment of The Exorcistconfirming what was said at the beginning of May about the company's interest in having Flanagan for an upcoming The Exorcist.

But it will not be a sequel to The Exorcist: Believer (2023) David Gordon Greenwhich had a disappointing performance at the box office, which is why Blumhouse, which had already given the green light to a trilogy that started with Believertook some time to rethink the next step.

This is where Mike Flanagan comes in and the idea of ​​a new movie is born. The Exorcistannounced by the press release as “a completely new story set in the Exorcist universe and is not a sequel to The Exorcist: Believers of 2023”.

The plans for the aforementioned trilogy have been discarded.

The new installment will be produced by Flanagan with his company Red Room Pictures and Trevor Macy for Intrepid Pictures.

It will mark the fourth film collaboration between Blumhouse and Flanagan, having written and directed Oculus (2013), Hush (2016), y Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) for Jason Blum's company.

Flanagan stated in a press release (via Deadline):

“The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker and It is an honor to have the opportunity to try something new, bold and terrifying within its universe. “Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I have done some of my favorite work, only makes this more exciting.”

In July 2021, Blumhouse, NBCUniversal and Peacock paid Morgan Creek $400 million for the rights to The Exorcist.
