science fiction drama Jupiter Ascending by sisters Lana and Lilly Wachowskibest known for having created the saga The MatrixIt did not live up to expectations.

Upon its theatrical release in 2015 via Warner Bros., critics and audiences ravaged the film, even questioning the Wachowskis’ prowess behind the lens.

The plot focuses on a young woman played by Mila Kunis, who discovers her destiny as heiress to intergalactic nobility, and must fight to protect Earth’s inhabitants from an ancient destructive industry. Kunis was accompanied by Channing Tatumplaying a protective werewolf of the destined queen, and the futuristic dystopian villain played by Eddie Redmayne.

For the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actress opens up about the moment she knew the movie would be an absolute box office flop:

“When did we know [que la película fracasaría]? Before we started production, because our production was cut in half. The original budget was double that, and you can do a lot more with a lot more money, and a lot of times those kinds of scripts have a great story but other great things. Right before pre-production, for a multitude of reasons with the studios and other things, the budget was cut and the film was different.”.

Kunis added: “I wish Channing was here because we have some good stories.”

The budget of Jupiter Ascending was $170 million, and had an estimated loss of more than $100 million at the box office.

We remember what Tatum told Variety this year about his experience in the film:

“I did four movies in a row with no free time. He wasn’t as good as he wanted to be in those last two movies because he didn’t have the energy. Jupiter Ascending It was a nightmare from the start. It was an oblique movie. All of us were there for seven months, breaking our humps. It was just hard.”

Between 2013 and 2015, the following projects were released in cinemas in which Tatum was either in a leading or supporting role: The Vow, 21 Jump Street, Don Jon, Side Effects, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, This is the End, White House Down, Foxcatcherthe sequel 22 Jump Streetanimated movies The Lego Movie y The Book of Life, Jupiter Ascending, the sequel Magic Mike XXL, y The Hateful Eight.

Redmayne, for his part, told GQ in a video interview:

“I won an award for [la película], for the worst performance of the year. So yeah, it was a pretty bad performance any way you look at it. For those people who hate what I do, ‘Jupiter Ascending’ tends to be their favorite of my performances. In hindsight, it may have been too much. But I love the Wachowskis. I’ve never felt so free on set.”
