On September 25, 2026, very different proposals arrive in the rooms and platforms: Lorca's demand for The black ballthe survival cinema of In the heart of the beastthe urban portrait of Madrid ext. and the docudrama about motherhood a son of his own. Four films that allow us to approach different territories of contemporary cinema, from historical fiction and adventure shows to creative documentary and the reconstruction of a real case.

The black ball (Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, 2026)

The Javis fable about what Lorca's work that gives the title to their film could have been: they imagine the story of that work with a gay boy from the provinces who in the 1930s is rejected at the casino and ends up a victim of the war lost in the snow; They imagine SebastiĂ¡n, a young gay man who flees from his town, destroyed by the Italian air force, and enlists in the Franco ranks where he has to guard Rafael RodrĂguez RapĂºn, Republican lieutenant, GarcĂa Lorca's last love; Finally, they imagine a grandson of SebastiĂ¡n who, upon his death, receives the play as an inheritance. A plot that intertwines three stories with the desire to vindicate homosexual identity for which the real events are freely recreated (RodrĂguez RapĂºn died from wounds from a bombing in Santander in August 1937 while the film fables his execution at the hands of SebastiĂ¡n) and imagines what “The Black Ball” could have been like if it were preserved or if it had been completed. With a notable production and cast, it has exciting moments and excellent rhythm, but there is a lack of maturity in the narrative that interweaves these stories and in dialogues that sacrifice the dramatic for the didactic. In any case, a worthwhile film and a heartfelt tribute to Federico.

In the heart of the beast (David Ayer, 2026)

Brad Pitt could not resist the proposal of being on screen for one hundred minutes: there is no ego that can resist such temptation. With the exception of two brief sequences with episodic characters, former Sergeant Belmont and his dog fill the frame throughout this well-known and expendable feature film. In Alaska, Belmont crashes his plane and has to go through all kinds of hardships with the help of his dog, also a former soldier, who also suffers nightmares due to the bitter memories of a war (the film has its bias as a Dog Survival Manual in the Hostile Nature). All very spectacular, with dreamlike landscapes, to say nothing and close with a testament of love for animals that is suitable for any occasion. If they wanted to emulate Di Caprio in “The Revenant” they hit the nail on the head.

Madrid ext. (Juan Cavestany, 2026) (Filmin)

This restless filmmaker takes to the streets of Madrid with his “image hunter” outfit and believes that he achieves powerful shots and situations, in some cases very attractive, revalidating the idea that an image can be more fascinating than reality. He is interested in neighborhood stores, old stores with basic and somewhat shabby signs about to disappear, like some video stores; also the provincial city on the outskirts of the great avenues, with visible clotheslines and neighbors chattering unproductively. The music has gotten in the way at times, but it is worth seeing this document, which is not only coffee for coffee lovers (I mean, people from Madrid).

a son of his own (Maite Alberdi, 2026) (Netflix)

The Chilean director of such valuable pieces as “The Mole Agent” and “The Infinite Memory” addresses another real case in an interesting docudrama, although of lesser stature. It tells the case of a girl who, obsessed and pressured with motherhood, simulates a pregnancy and even steals a baby from a hospital. Docudrama skillfully interweaves reconstructions with actors and representations with real characters, thus achieving greater verisimilitude. There is evidence of how motherhood can lead to paranoid fixation, but the film does not go further.
