Below is a basic recipe for preparing an oven hot dog:

Ingredients

  • 8 sausages

  • 8 hot dog buns (or crustless bread)

  • 1 medium onion, cut into thin rings

  • 1 medium bell pepper (red, green or yellow), cut into thin strips

  • 8 slices of cheese (use one that melts well)

  • 1 cup tomato sauce or ketchup

  • 1 cup of mayonnaise

  • mustard to taste

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Olive oil or oil for sautéing

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • In a frying pan, add a little olive oil or oil and sauté the onion rings and bell pepper strips until soft.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Meanwhile, boil the sausages in water for a few minutes to partially cook them.
  • Cut the hot dog buns in half lengthwise, but don’t separate the halves completely, leaving them together at the top.
  • Spread a layer of mayonnaise and another of tomato sauce or ketchup on each bun.
  • Place a sausage on each bun and add some of the onion and pepper sauce on top.
  • Place a slice of cheese on top of each sausage.
  • Close the buns, wrap them in foil and bake for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the buns are lightly browned.
  • Remove from the oven and serve the oven hot dogs with mustard and other condiments to taste.
