Ingredients
1 kg of potatoes (peeled and cut into thin slices)
2 cups grated gruyere or mozzarella cheese
1 cup grated parmesan cheese
2 1/2 cups heavy cream (or regular heavy cream)
2 minced garlic cloves
3 tablespoons of butter
Salt and pepper to taste
Nutmeg (optional)
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F).
Unite a large refractory with butter or oil. - In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add minced garlic and sauté until lightly golden and fragrant.
- Add the potato slices to the pan with the garlic and melted butter.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Cook the potatoes for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, so that they are slightly softened. - In a separate bowl, mix the gruyère or mozzarella cheese with the Parmesan cheese.
- Arrange half of the cooked potatoes in a layer in the greased baking dish.
Sprinkle a generous portion of the cheese mixture on top. - Repeat with another layer of potatoes and more cheese until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of cheese on top.
- Pour the heavy cream over the top of the potatoes and cheese, ensuring all the potatoes are evenly coated.
If desired, grate a little nutmeg over the surface to enhance the flavor. - Cover the refractory with aluminum paper and take it to the preheated oven for about 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 to 30 minutes, or until the surface is golden brown and the potatoes are cooked through and tender.
- Remove from the oven and let rest for a few minutes before serving to firm up a bit.
