The French news agency, AFP, reported that the filmmaker Roman Polanskiwill no longer go to trial in Los Angeles for the alleged rape of a minor in 1973. The trial would take place in August 2025.
The director's lawyer, Alexander Rufus-Isaacs, told AFP that the case had been “resolved in the summer to the mutual satisfaction of the parties and has now been formally dismissed.”
Gloria Allred, the anonymous plaintiff's lawyer, also confirmed to AFP that “The parties agreed to a conciliation agreement to their mutual satisfaction.”
THE LAWSUIT AGAINST ROMAN POLANSKI
The lawsuit, filed in June 2023, alleges Polanski raped “Jane Doe” in 1973 when she was a minor at his Benedict Canyon home. The plaintiff had met Polanski at a party months earlier and he had invited her to dinner, given her tequila shots, and taken her to his house, where she passed out in his bed.
The lawsuit details:
“The plaintiff remembers waking up in the defendant's bed and that he was lying next to her. He told her he wanted to have sex with her. The plaintiff, although stunned, told the defendant 'No. Please don't do this'”.
The plaintiff made her complaint public at a press conference, accompanied by Allred, where she was identified as Robin M., and said she was 16 years old when the alleged incident occurred. Polanski denied the accusation through his lawyer.
POLANSKI FLEED THE UNITED STATES IN 1978 DURING ANOTHER RAPE CASE
Polanski would not have been able to appear at the trial in person and it should have been presented through a live broadcast, since the filmmaker has been a fugitive from the United States since 1978, after having fled on the eve of being sentenced for the rape of a 13-year-old girlwithout being able to return to the country where he would be arrested.
In this case, Polanski was convicted of sodomy and rape of a 13-year-old girl after negotiating a plea deal. He served time in a California prison, but prison officials released him earlier than anticipated in the judge's original sentence. Laurence J. Rittenband. The judge then attempted to have Polanski brought back to court for a new sentence. Instead, Polanski fled to Europe to avoid and escape a second arrest and imprisonment.
Efforts to resolve the criminal case and extradite him have been unsuccessful.
