In August 2024, 20th Century Studios will release a new installment of the science fiction saga in theaters, Alienwhich was filmed under the title Alien: Romulusby the Uruguayan filmmaker, Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead), which is currently in the post-production stage.
The project is described as “an original independent feature film”, which is expected to include the appearance of the Xenomorph aliens. The film will be a reboot of the science fiction and horror franchise.
The cast is headed by Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla, The Craft: Legacy, Mare of Easttown, Devs), and it is the protagonist herself who shares a new unpublished detail of the plot of Alien: Romuluswhich allows us to get a better idea of the franchise's timeline (via Variety):
“Be supposed to [su trama] It should be located between the first film and the second. They brought the same team from 'Aliens', James Cameron's film. The same people who built those Xenomorphs came and built ours. So being able to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for over 45 years and have been a big part of their lives has been really incredible.”
And to refresh our memory, the original classic Alien by Ridley Scott from 1979, ended with a shot in which the protagonist, Sigourney Weaver, expelled a Xenomorph from her escape capsule, before falling into cryogenic sleep that would take her back to human civilization. The sequel, Aliens by Cameron, released in 1986, picked up the plot years later, while Ripley accompanied a military mission investigating a possible Xenomorph attack on a remote space colony.
Spaeny is joined in the cast Isabela Merced (Instant Family, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Sweet Girl), David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearny Aileen Wu.
The following was previously announced about the new film:
“Plot details are kept in a cryogenic chamber, but unlike the other films that focused on adults in corporate, military and scientific roles, This ninth installment of the franchise will focus on a group of young people.”
“In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe..”
Álvarez co-wrote the script with his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (remake Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe, Don’t Breathe 2remake Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and produced the feature film in the company of Ridley Scottdirector of the original classic and the prequels Prometheus y Alien: Covenant.
Alien: Romulus will be released in theaters on August 16, 2024 via 20th Century Studios. This will be the first installment of the saga Alien to be distributed by Disney.
