Amazon Studios revealed the first trailer for the sci-fi dramatic thriller Foestarring Oscar nominees, Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) y Paul Mescal (After sun), playing a married couple in the middle of an apocalyptic world. Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) completes the leading trio.
Garth Davis (Lion) co-writes, directs and produces Foewith a script adapted from the homonymous novel by John Reid (I’m Thinking of Ending Things). The author co-wrote the script with Davis.
The film is described as:
“A haunting exploration of marriage and identity, set in an uncertain world, pitting humanity against an artificial alternative.”
“The year is 2065, and Hen (Ronan) and Junior (Mescal) are a married couple with seven years of experience living a lonely life on their isolated farm that has been in the latter’s family for generations. But her quiet life is disrupted by the arrival of an uninvited stranger (Pierre), who shows up on her doorstep with a surprising proposal.
In the preview that you find at the end of this note, Junior says he has been selected to live “up there”, that is, in a state experimental station that orbits the Earth. But do not worry. Arrangements have already been made so that when he leaves, Hen won’t have a chance to miss him, because she won’t be left alone, not even for a moment. Instead, she will meet some kind of robotic equivalent of her spouse who will then push her to make a life-changing decision for her.
The feature film is produced by Davis, Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Iain Canning, and Emile Sherman. Executive producers include Reid, Dawn Olmstead, David Levine, Robert Walak, and Samantha Lang.
The novel Foe de Reid was originally published in 2018.
The film’s world premiere is scheduled to take place on the stage of the New York Film Festival (September 29-October 15, 2023). Amazon will distribute the film in the United States via MGM (October 6) and Canada (October 13), while Transmission Films will do it in Australia (October 19), and in the United Kingdom and Ireland it will arrive via MetFilmDistribution (October 20).
As a curiosity, Foe will be released in US theaters on the same day as Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese.
