In December 2020, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures gave the green light to the reboot of the great horror film classic, The Exorcistwhich will be led by David Gordon Greena filmmaker who is currently promoting Halloween Endsthe closing of the trilogy he created with the same studios with whom he will collaborate on the reboot/sequel to The Exorcistand at the end of this campaign, he will put himself behind the lens again.
The plan for the restart The Exorcist will be similar to the approach of Halloween, Halloween Kills y Halloween Ends Gordon Green, Blumhouse and Universal, in the style of legacy reboot/sequel, in the form of a trilogy.
With the release date of the first film scheduled for October 13, 2023, the filmmaker and the studios are preparing to start filming and give the initial click in a few weeks. In an interview with Variety, Gordon Green comments:
“We start in a couple of weeks and we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and dive into the next big franchise.. We have an amazing cast that is coming together and scripts that we’re all excited about.”
“[Me siento] honored to enter something that is so valuable in the history of cinema. And knowing that there is a fan base that is curious, aware, alert, potentially concerned to see what we are doing. What I like is that people say, ‘Is it stressful?’ No, it’s exciting because I’ve spent so much of my life making movies, and you’re just begging the audience to tune in, see what’s going on, or buy movie tickets. With these, I have stories to tell, I have an imagination to express, and the way I can do that within these films is an incredible opportunity.”
The project will star Leslie Odom Jr. (Knives Out 2, One Night in Miami), y Ann Dowd (Hereditary), con By Ellen Burstyn (The Exorcist) reprising his role as Chris MacNeil, Regan MacNeil’s mother (Linda Blair).
As for the argument:
“Odom Jr. will play the father of the possessed girl. Desperate for help, he will seek out the character played by Burstyn.”
Blumhouse produces alongside Morgan Creek Productions.
The original 1973 film, had the sequels The Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), The Exorcist III (1990), Exorcist: The Beginning (2004) y Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005). The 2005 installment is the most recent time the property has hit theaters. However, none of them managed to catapult themselves to the same level –or even close– to the original directed by William Friedkin.
The theatrical release of the first installment is expected for the October 13, 2023.
