Legendary Entertainment continues to prepare the audience for the release of the reboot of the cult classic, The Toxic Avenger of Troma Entertainment, which launched in January 2019 with Macon Blair (Green Room, I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore) as director and screenwriter of the project.
In addition to announcing that the film’s world premiere will be held at Fantastic Fest (to take place September 21-28, 2023 in Austin, Texas), the studio revealed the official full synopsis of the new version in which it has Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as Winston Gooze (via Bloody Disgusting):
“While the original film followed the fate of Melvin Ferd Junko III (Mitch Cohen), who goes from zero to toxic hero in a bullying case gone wrong, Macon Blair’s contemporary take follows a hideously deformed creature of superhuman size. and own strength.
“Peter Dinklage stars as downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze who, after falling into a vat of toxic waste, becomes none other than The Toxic Avenger. This timely reimagining lives up to the environmental themes, as Winston battles the evil forces of greed and corruption to save his son, his friends and his community.”
“Although this story exists on its own terms, the spirit undoubtedly remains connected to the original. Troma fans old and new will be delighted to know that the film has been rated “R” for violence and gore, per Troma lore.”

The cast is made up of Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Jacob Tremblay (Room, Predator), Kevin Bacon (Tremors, The Following), Taylour Paige (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Sarah Niles (I May Destroy You), Jonny Coyne (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Elijah Wood (Maniac, Come to Daddy, Lord of the Rings), Julia Davis (Sally4Ever):
- Dinklage plays Melvin, who subsequently becomes the Toxic Avenger.
- Bacon gives life to the villain of the story.
- Coyne plays a shadowy criminal figure, while Niles plays a corrupt city official.
The Asociación Cinematográfica (Motion Picture Association; MPA)the agency in charge of assigning the age rating of all films from Hollywood film studios, awarded the R RATING to The Toxic Avenger by:
“Strong violence and gore, constant language, sexual references and brief graphic nudity.”
The founders of Troma, Lloyd Kaufman y Michael heartwho also directed the 1984 cult classic, will produce the new version.
Filming ended in August 2021 in Bulgaria.
