Focus Features debuted on first official trailer of Werwulfthe highly anticipated most recent film project from Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu), which has Eggers' characteristic sombre touch printed on it.

Directed by Eggers from a script he co-wrote with Vision (The Northman), Werwulf is starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, y Willem Dafoewho also starred in his previous film, Nosferatu, y Ralph Ineson (The Witch).

Werwulfa medieval horror set in a town in 13th-century England, focuses on the mythical monster that lends its name to the official title. The mysterious creature lurks in the mist, turning local legends into terrifying reality, as the villagers face an ancient supernatural threat. Is “a heartbreaking story of devotion, damnation and the devil within”according to its synopsis.

The study presents it as the “Eggers' most visceral and disturbing experience to date”and promoted by the author himself as the darkest thing i have ever written. The plot centers on the protagonist, an unnamed farmer played by Taylor-Johnson, described by Eggers as “tormented and in great pain”which “try to find salvation through love”.

Other cast members include Bodhi Rae Breathnatch (Hamnet, Shelter), y Jack Morris (Desperate Journey).

The script includes dialogues faithful to the period, in Middle Englishand has translations and annotations for those unfamiliar with Old English, according to information previously shared by the studio.

The plot is set around the year 1300 AD, before the extermination of wolves in England.

Eggers filmed in 35mmwith the grain structure of a black and white film incorporated into a color film to create a unique aesthetic. While all the scenarios used were built from scratch.

Eggers and Sjón produce alongside Focus Features, Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, and with Chris Columbus y Eleanor Columbus as executive producers. Focus produced and financed the project.

Jarin Blaschke is the director of photography, with Louise Ford like the editor. Both have partnered with Eggers in their respective areas on all of their feature films (The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, Nosferatu y Werwulf).

Werwulf marks a new collaboration between Eggers and Focus Features, after Nosferatuwhich became the studio's second highest-grossing film in the United States box office, accumulating $90.5 million in 2024. After the overwhelming success of Obsession by Curry Barker, currently Focus's highest-grossing film, that position fell a few notches.

Co-production focus resources The Lighthouse y The Northman. Both were distributed by Universal Pictures. The Witch For its part, it was distributed by A24 in the national market, and by Universal in the international market. Focus is an independent film production company subsidiary of Universal Pictures, owned by Comcast.

The theatrical release of Werwulf is scheduled for December 25, 2026.
