Released in 1980, Friday the 13th came after the success of another horror classic, Halloweenby John Carpenter, taking advantage of the rise of the slasher subgenre and establishing a mythology that would soon take on a life of its own.
Although many mistakenly remember Jason Voorhees as the central character of Friday the 13th, Miller's original script revolved around the mother, Mrs. Pamela Voorhees, who turns out to be the murderer seeking revenge for the supposed drowning of her young son at Camp Crystal Lake. Jason himself only appears in the famous jump scare end of the film, emerging from the lake in a dreamlike sequence.
It wasn't until the sequel Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981), in which an inexplicably adult Jason became the franchise's killer; He initially hid his face under a burlap sack before adopting his now iconic hockey mask in the third installment. This sequel reinterpreted the story to present a reality in which Jason never drowned.
The saga became one of the most enduring horror franchises, giving rise to more than ten films, the crossover Freddy vs. Jasonto the 2009 reboot and the upcoming prequel television series, Crystal Lakewhich revisits the characters and mythology based on Miller's original script. Miller will be credited as one of the executive producers of the A24 and Peacock series, which will premiere on the platform in October of this year.

The producers of the original film, Horror Inc., had argued that Miller's involvement was a work-for-hire, but a judge ruled that it was not. The case paved the way for Miller to license the aforementioned prequel series, Crystal Lake.
In addition to Friday the 13thMiller also wrote for series such as All My Children, One Life to Live, Another World, Guiding Light y General Hospital. His work in All My Children helped the series win three Daytime Emmy Awards for its outstanding drama series writing team.
Miller was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1940. He is survived by his wife, Tina Thurston Miller, and their two sons, Ian and Josh.
